You’re Invited: Gardenlicious Kids Cook-Off

Have a budding sous chef in your house? Bring your little kitchen helper to the Arboretum for an event that will spark both their creativity and their appetite.
The Gardenlicious Kids Cook-Off, honoring Children’s Garden Capital Campaign Chair Cecile Bonte, challenges local kiddos to create their own culinary masterpieces using items from the Arboretum’s Incredible Edible Garden. Though the deadline has passed for entering and the finalists already selected, young cooking enthusiasts and their parents are invited to the Alexander Camp House from 1 to 3pm, Sunday, June 29, to watch the Kid Cooks in action.
The goal is for children to see how food choices impact their overall health. The finalists have been tasked to use at least one ingredient from our Edible Garden to craft a healthy dish, which will be judged by renowned Dallas chefs Kent Rathbun of Abacus and Scott Gottlich of Bijoux, as well as Shinsei restaurateur Lynae Fearing.
The possibilities for crafting a “gardenlicious” menu item are almost endless. Finalists can find fresh corn, pumpkin, squash, watermelon, cantaloupe and okra growing in the Edible Garden during the summer, in addition to blueberries, avocados, asparagus, raspberry, cacao, pomegranate and other fruits and veggies harvested year-round at the Arboretum (full list here). We can hardly wait to dig into what the Kid Cooks prepare.
But the fun doesn’t stop there. After the Kids Cook-Off, the young chefs get to taste and judge menu items from the participating chefs. Plus, Cook-Off guests have the chance to snack on the celebrity chefs’ creations.
Tickets are $8 for non-members, $5 for members, $3 for students, and you can also purchase a Contributor ticket for $30 to help underwrite worthwhile Arboretum programming such as the Kids Cook-Off. Ticket prices are in addition to the purchase of a general admission ticket. If you’re unable to attend, consider making a donation in honor Cecile Bonte and our local Kid Cooks.
