Find Peace and Quiet to Connect with Nature at the Dallas Arboretum
The Dallas Arboretum is known for our seasonal festivals and activities, but one of the best and sometimes overlooked aspects of the garden is the profound sense of peace and tranquility it can offer to guests who would like a beautiful space to meditate and catch up on some much needed “me-time”. Even if you visit on a busy weekend, these five peaceful places in the gardens promise some quiet if you want it.
1. Boswell Family Garden Gazebo
Located just up a set of stairs from the Sunken Garden, the gazebo offers a beautiful view of White Rock Lake, a nice breeze, and two wooden benches. Occasionally, a guest or two stop here to relax, but more often than not, it is a perfect place to sit with just yourself and have a quick sack lunch or catch up on some reading.
2. The Secret Garden
This garden really feels secret, located to the right of the Camp House fountain, next to Lay Family Garden. It includes a wishing well, trees, and an ornamental trellis. It’s easy to miss this, walking right past it on the way to the grotto if you are not aware of it. A great place to get some air, take a phone call or eat lunch, you’ll enjoy the sounds of water as you relax.
3. The Poetry Garden inside A Woman’s Garden Phase 1
Walk to the very front and center of A Woman’s Garden and you will see a ledge overlooking a small intimate square-shaped garden. Take the stairs by the ledge down to the archway that leads into the Poetry Garden and you’ll find yourself in a beautiful space. The benches in this square garden provide a wonderful quiet space to sit and think.
4. Nancy’s Garden
Nancy’s Garden is located between Jonsson Color Garden and the lawn in front of the DeGolyer House. Walking along the Paseo de Flores, if you take the last entrance to Jonsson before you get to the DeGolyer House, and continue walking north, you’ll see a small path on your right side before you reach the steps on the side of DeGolyer – this narrow pathway takes you directly to Nancy’s Garden. This garden includes a metal bench, two flower beds bursting with color and a plaque with Nancy’s name on it. It makes an intimate wedding location and is hidden from direct sight, so it’s a wonderful area to stop and gather your thoughts.
5. Margaret and Jay Simmons Lagoon inside of A Tasteful Place
In the Arboretum’s newest garden, the Margaret and Jay Simmons Lagoon is located directly to the north of A Tasteful Place. It can be accessed by taking the concrete pathway that connects A Tasteful Place to Jonsson Color Garden and Palmer Fern Dell. Before you get to the main bridge to enter Jonsson Color Garden, there is another open path on your left leading into the lagoon area. Cross the bridge and on your left you will find a small table and set of chairs slightly hidden, right across from the flowing fountain. This area is perfect if you love to read, write or meditate next to water.
One of our priorities at the garden is letting guests reconnect with nature and enjoy its calming effects. So we’re proud that there’s always somewhere in the gardens if you need a bit of peace and quiet to do that.
