Chandler Lindsley knows just how to make fall festive: Add a few pumpkins, a dash of autumnal beauty and a tablespoon of giving. At least, that’s the recipe for her latest cookbook.
Lindsley knows her way around the pumpkin patch, having inspired the cookbook Dallas Arboretum Pumpkin Recipes, which celebrates fall’s bounty—and tastiness—with pumpkin-themed recipes compiled (and tested) by Lindsley. As the granddaughter of Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt, Lindsley also knows a bit about giving, as she donated the Shadow Garden to the Arboretum in honor of her husband, Henry Dickinson Lindsley III.
By way of recipes, Lindsley believes the recipe for homemade pumpkin ice cream that came from her sister-in-law JoAnne Roosevelt is the “simplest recipe and the best” featured in the book. Another favorite is The Mystery Pumpkin Soup, a recipe from Joan McIlyar, which will warm your family’s tummies and will have them asking about the secret ingredient. And while butter isn’t exactly a secret ingredient when it comes to cakes, the half-pound of butter in Ginny Eulich’s Pumpkin “Yum” Cake yields a scrumptious result.
After your belly is full of pumpkin-filled goodness, head to Autumn at the Arboretum, taking place through November 26, where you can stroll, take pictures and picnic amid 65,000 pumpkins, gourds and squash in the nationally acclaimed Pumpkin Village. If you’ve reached your pumpkin quota, there are 150,000 fall flowers in full bloom to enliven your fall festivities.
Whether you go to Autumn at the Arboretum for the pumpkins, chrysanthemums, scavenger hunts or hay bale maze, do make sure to stop by the Hoffman Family Gift Store to get a copy of the Chandler Lindsley-inspired Dallas Arboretum Pumpkin Festival Recipes. All proceeds from the book, which sells for $4.95, go toward the care, maintenance and growth of the Arboretum. From October 24 through November 2, the Hoffman Family Gift Store will also be participating in Partners Card discounts.
